Wedding Design: Sara

I have decided that I need to do more wedding work. I absolutely LOVE typography. It makes me giddy. I have been scouring a few different sites just drooling over the new calligraphy typefaces out there. It seriously makes my heart race. Dorky? sure. But hey, I love me some .otf!

This design was actually done quite a while ago [clearly] and I'm posting it because a recent client reminded me of it [they're cousins...I believe :) Thanks for the referral!]. If you didn't know, my life got reeeeal crazy here in this last little while. Two babies, two moves, three states. A little nutso. So I forgot. But this was honestly the first strict typography design I ever did, and I am crazy about it. I always have been. It printed up beautifully and Sara was a dream to work with. I seriously love it when my clients have such style! I am all about injecting little bits of their personality into my work. I really think it makes things so much more meaningful.

Custom Design: Sweet Baby Tate

I had the chance to design some custom nursery prints for Cameron's cousin. Her new little girl, Tate, is such a doll! Her dad calls her "tater tot" so I added a cute little monogrammed print just because. I absolutely love how it turned out. Red and blue and girly. What do you think?

Custom Design: Baby Details

I have had these gorgeous pictures of the boys since they were less than two months old. I've been wanting to put them together in a collage for their nursery and I am completely thrilled at how they turned out. They add such a sweet feeling to the nursery. A reminder of just how tiny they once were.

So much so, that I made a freebie for ya! {And you can use it for whatever you'd like - Not just baby stuff!}

It fits in an 8x10 frame and is compatible with photoshop and photoshop elements. You'll need a basic understanding of clipping masks.

To download, just click here.

And if you make something with this, I would LOVE to see it! Send it to me in an e-mail or something. For real.

Blog Site Design: Pound the Pavement for Parenthood

I am honored to have been a part of this project. This organization, Pound the Pavement for Parenthood, is the organization that changed our lives forever last summer. The founder and my good friend, Jill, wanted a new look for the site, so I designed their new logo [look close at the reflection...] and website. It's hosted on blogger, but once we get the URL changed, you'd never know. Hosting it on blogger just makes things really easy to update in the future. Coding it isn't the easiest, but I think the result is totally worth the time it took.

Pound the Pavement for Parenthood is the coolest non-profit. We found it last summer and attended a race for another couple trying to save money for IVF [they're expecting twins now, by the way!] Pound the Pavement helps organize the race and the couple comes out of it with a lot of support and funds for their treatment [or adoption!] and all us infertiles get to support each other and make friends with others in our same situation. Of the 4 couples we met at that race, there are now 6 babies either here or on the way. [2 sets of twins and 2 sweet little girls]. One of the best ways I found to cope with the depression that so often comes along with being infertile was to help others conquer it. This organization does just that. My involvement with PPP is far from over. I'm the webmaster and I'm on the selection committee for sponsored couples. I also intend to start up a race or two in Texas once we get down there. If you're interested in starting a race in your area or being sponsored in an existing location, check out the site! There's info or contact info for any questions you might have.

If you get the chance, like them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. There are exciting things happening and I know many of you could be considered for sponsorship. [You don't have to live in Utah!]

My Dad & Me From A to Z

For Father's Day this year, I really wanted to do something really special for Cam. He is such an amazing dad to Nash & Gray. He does so much for them and for me and he loves every minute of it. Late at night, we talk about going to Texas. Almost every night he expresses how nervous he is to be so busy with school. He doesn't want to miss any part of their childhood. They are so important to him. However, providing for our family is also super important to him. School is a must. And it is demanding. And he will have early mornings and late nights. We won't get to see him near as much as we do right now. So I decided to make sure our boys get a healthy dose of their dad on the nights he won't be home before bedtime. This book was my solution:

I started by making a list of A through Z and writing out something specific to Cam and the boys for each one. I outlined the major things I knew I wanted to hit on: church, fun, family, bathtime, bedtime, etc. and double checked they were accounted for. Then, I created a very simple base template with one large space for a picture, one large letter and a short piece of text explaining the letter. The result was a simple, beautiful book that shows just how appreciated Cameron is. I am so pleased with how it turned out. It just makes me giddy. The boys love reading it. I love reading it. Cam loves reading it. And it's so wonderful to see pictures actually printed and simple, short details of their lives right now.

If there's enough interest, I'll make the templates available for use. Otherwise, I will just enjoy this little piece of happiness sitting on my bookshelf.

Save The Date Design: Julie

Julie might be the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. She wanted a typographic save the date to coordinate with her yacht wedding. I love how fun this design turned out. She printed them on magnets to send to her guests. We ended up doing two save the dates. One with information to the wedding ceremony and one to the reception held in Arizona. Classy and fun! I custom designed the anchor logo with the J & C intertwined. I ended up sending it to the baker making their wedding cake to include on the top tier.

Wedding Invitation Design: Audrey

I had a complete ball putting together this invitation for Audrey and Aaron. We were under a time crunch because the sweet couple had friends coming from London, but Audrey had such a great idea of what she wanted. We definitely caught the same vision! I wish them all the best. They were a pleasure to work with. I love when my clients aren't afraid of a little color!

The Six List

From reading other blogs and talking to other women in similar situations as mine, it seems we have similar problems. How do we balance all the different facets of our lives and feel fulfilled and NOT burned out at the end of the day?

I found myself being so angry at myself while I was working full time because I had all these things I wanted to do, but never enough time to do them. I did, though, have time to watch TV shows at lunch, and spend time on Facebook/Pinterest/etc. I was also having a hard time keeping up with my design clients because I just flat out didn't want to do ANYTHING when I got home from work at 5, let alone make a good dinner and tackle even the tiniest of projects.

While trying to find a solution to my productivity dilemma, I stumbled upon this piece of advice:
There is a legendary story that in the 1920's, Charles Schwab (at the time one of the wealthiest individuals in the United States and founder of Bethlehem steel) wanted to get more done each day for himself and his executive staff. He was approached by Ivy Lee, a public relations expert, who told him a "secret" to increase their productivity.

Mr Lee told Mr Schwab to implement this secret methodology and then, after he had seen the results of the method, to come back and pay him what he thought it was worth. Mr. Schwab and his executives tried the idea for a month and received such amazing results that Mr. Schwab wrote a check to Mr. Lee for $25,000, which at that time was a huge sum of money.

Here's the trick: At the end of each day, write a list of the six most important things to do for the next day and order them from one to six. In the morning start with number one. Keep working on it until completed, then move to number two. Keep working on this one until completed, and then move to the next item on the list. Continue this way until completing all the priority items on the list.

I decided to take this a step further, because I need a little flexibility in my day. I need to be able to choose what to prioritize or what to work on. Enter, the six list:

I printed two to a sheet, cut them in half, and got them bound into a little pad at Office Max. Since I'm not working anymore, that top section has been modified to be "baby" focused. A lot of you might be thinking that 24 things in a day is too many. You're right. I shoot to get 3-4 done in each section, but by listing out all 6, in case I'm feeling great I don't just sit around saying "my list is done!" I know the next thing I want to work on immediately. Also, some of my 6 things are very small. I've had a hard time remembering to take my prenatal with food, so under baby, the first 4 normally look like this:

  1. Good Breakfast

  2. Take Prenatal

  3. Good Lunch

  4. Take Iron

These might not seem like a big deal, but I know myself well enough to list it because it won't happen otherwise. And when the days all blur together, it's nice to be able to look and say "yep. I did take my supplements today."

Also, when I'm filling out what I want to get done the following day, I already have 2-3 things in each section (because they weren't crossed off) so making the list each night only takes a minute or two. And because it's in a notepad, while I'm working on the list, if I notice something that needs to get done the following day, I can just write it in, instead of hoping I remember that night.

Other things that make the lists are: "plan FHE, shower & ready, catch up finances, pay bills, pack Cam's lunch, read hypnobirthing, take a nap, dishes, sew 1 diaper, deposit cash, grocery shopping, wipe down bathroom, make bed, make dinner, Julie's insert designs, fold laundry, make freezer breakfasts," etc. Some are bigger than others. Some take more time than others, but being reminded of the little things that need to be done is often just as important as making sure the big things get done. Before bed each night, I ask Cam if he has any requests. This makes sure that he doesn't come home from work and ask if something got done that we haven't clearly discussed earlier. He knows there's a time at the end of the day where he can put something on my list.

Clearly, all 4 categories probably won't fit with everyone's situation. I made a six list for my sister Lindsay at her request. She has said that it has helped her get so much done during the day. Which is when I figured I should probably share with the world, because if something works this great for two people as different as me and her, it will probably work great for a lot of you too! Hers looks a bit like this:

The bottom can be used for phone numbers, reminders, dinner ideas, etc.

This design is copyrighted, but I'm happy to make a custom, print-ready file for anyone who wants it. I was thinking $5 for the time it takes to modify would be fair.

Thoughts?

Moms Know

For those of you who have been wondering, we did an IUI a little bit ago. I'll cut to the chase and just let you know that it didn't work. Even though we were kind of expecting this, (our chances are really not good with an IUI), it hurts just the same. The day we found out, I was grateful I didn't really have to talk to anyone. Cam packed me a star wars fruit snack and a note giving me some "Jedi Love" for the day. He is amazing.

We texted our parents and let them know. (Sometimes it's just best not to hear a voice.) And my mom e-mailed me immediately. We got to talking and she sent me this experience:

Do you want to hear my best example of grace under fire?  I can't remember if it was the third or fourth round of chemo for Grandma McGuire, but she had to have something done as an out patient and she asked me to take her to the hospital. She had decided to have the nurse shave her head while they were doing what they had to do because it was going to fall out anyways. She had thought this though a head of time and when they pulled the curtain back she walked out in grandpas black cowboy hat with her head held high. We didn't talk. I knew she was thoroughly tired of going through the motions again. To me it seemed to be her defense against the world and what people think. Find your hat my dear. You can keep moving forward. Focus on others today. You'll get through the day a little easier. I love you.

My mom always knows just what to say. She also knows when nothing is right. When silence is better. She knows the pain I go through because she loves me. She hurts right along side me. And she reminds me that our Heavenly Parents are hurting too. They are not the ones to blame for this. No one is to blame. This is just a "thing." It's not a bad thing or a good thing. It's just a "thing." It's a part of our lives that both blesses us and strengthens us. It's our trial by fire.

And to remind me of a strong and beautiful woman who walked through fire gracefully on a daily basis, I made this for our home.

If I can endure this trial with half the grace she endured hers, I will be proud.

And someday, I will be a mother who knows. For now, I am grateful for mine. Because she knows.

Love Notes

It's high time I posted something created with my silhouette! I made this candy jar mailbox back in February and left it for C to find. There was a note on the top of it that explained:

"There's only one rule. To take the note inside, you must replace it with one of your own!"

It was intended to be a Valentine's Day decoration, but we won't be putting it away any time soon!

I designed it in Silhouette Studio, cut it out on contact paper (SO MUCH CHEAPER THAN VINYL OR TRANSFER PAPER!) with the silhouette, adhered the contact paper to the candy jar and etched it with armouretch for about 3 minutes. The design says "C + K, Post Office Department, What I Like About You Division"

The love notes that come out of this baby are stellar. :) I highly recommend trying something like this out!

Oh Jess!

I did a little bit of a surprise facelift for the blog Oh Jess! She's always been one of my best advertisers and has corralled plenty of paying clients my way, so this facelift was done as a birthday present. For a healthy dose of humor, a slammin' playlist and some gorgeous food, pop on over! And wish her a happy 20th birthday today, too!

Facelifts All Around!

It was recently brought to my attention that people actually want to know what I'm designing. It was also brought to my attention that a lot of people don't even know the extent of my designing.

So here it is, friends.

I design websites & blogs.

From scratch, from blogger templates, from wordpress, etc.

Headers, custom coding, backgrounds, buttons, navigation bars, social media buttons, etc.

Basically, I design the whole enchilada.

I design promotional materials.

This includes, but is absolutely not limited to, backdrops for retail stores, signs for retail stores, flyers, brochures, newspaper and magazine advertisements, etc.

I design parties.

Invites, announcements, dessert tables, etc.

[10 bucks says you're sick of hearing about these. :)]

I design by request.

I've designed senior ads, touched up photos, scrapbooked for others, etc.

[I would LOVE to design pass-along cards for adoptive couples.]

Like I said, I design the whole enchilada.

And now, I'm giving those design services a home.

Click here to see examples of the whole enchilada.

I figured I'd fill you in before you just started seeing random posts about new designs I've done. :)

There are currently 3 of 5 openings available in my design queue. If you would like to discuss pricing for your design project please contact me.
