Rise & Shout!

I am a BYU cougar. My parents both attended BYU. My sister, her husband, me and my husband all attend(ed) BYU. I was actually born while my parents were living in BYU married housing. My entire family is able to sing the BYU fight song start to finish at a ridiculously young age. We bleed blue.

It starts out "Rise & shout! The Cougars are out!" My parents used this as a mechanism to get us out of bed in the mornings. The end of the fight song is a series of "Rah rah rahs" followed by "GooooooooOOOO Cougars!" [For getting us out of bed, they'd replace Cougars, with Kristin, Lindsay, Jessica, etc.]

Here's where my dilemma comes in. I no longer have a zealous parent to get me out of bed in the mornings. I've been doing alright getting my fanny to work in the mornings by 9, but I received an e-mail today explaining that our office hours are now 8:30 to 5:30 or [in my case, to avoid cutting into my "wife time"] 8:00 to 5:00.

Also, this comic accurately describes my outlook on the entire "early-to-bed; early-to-rise" mentality. So all of you morning people can just keep your condescending comments to yourself.

So, the question is: how do you convince yourself to get out of bed in the morning?

Just to give you an idea of the severity of the situation....my first thought is generally: "No. Way. I won't get to sleep again for [x] hours." Yep. I'm in trouble.

  2. Hmm... When I was in seminary and had to wake up at a ridiculously early hour I would bribe myself to get out of bed. I'd tell myself I could have a cookie or donut or something if I could just get out of bed. Usually by the time I was fully awake and in the shower I would've forgotten about the promise I had made myself. So maybe stocking up on something wonderful for breakfast that you can only have if you're awake and ready by a certain time will help. Cinnamon rolls freeze really well and can be reheated quickly for breakfast!

  3. Mmm. Well, I have a whimpering child...otherwise I'd be right there with ya. I suggest Lucky Charms cereal as a bribe. Ooh and chocolate milk. Well, it would work for me. Or some really yummy bath scrub. A hot shower makes me happy. :)

  4. I've got NOTHING for you! I always thought I was the worst morning person ever and then I married Ryan and he proved me wrong... our bad habits have already rubbed off onto Kaylee. Mornings make me physically ill and there isn't much in the world that I hate more! Being pregnant makes it worse :(

    GOOD LUCK!!!!!

  5. well...you've never exactly been a morning person. But I do remember you being really excited to wake up in the morning with C and go for a run with him/ while he did.. Maybe it'll put a drop in the bucket to make him breakfast in the morning, or take the time really doll yourself up :) You really love what you do, I promised myself real breakfast if I woke up on time for 6am labs.. definitely worth it !

  6. I have to be at the office by eight, and it's a 35 minute drive on a good day with no accidents causing slow traffic. Today I woke up at 7:10. I've gotten really good at second-day hair. and third. and fourth. Stick some more product in it and no one's the wiser.

But, when I actually go to bed on time I don't have a problem getting up on time (funny idea, I know). So, maybe make it a point to be in bed on time.

  8. I'm NOT a morning person. Even with an early riser child I'm still not a morning person. Even Scotty knows this. His solution to get me out of bed at 7am? Run into my room yelling "Mama, wake OUT!" (because wake up means i don't have to get out of the bed yet) and turning on the lights.

Some people just have it and others have to shake off the demons every morning.
